The basics of interior painting

Interior painting is a smart and economical way to renew your home or office and your mood, but it is also necessary for proper maintenance of each space.

If you are planning to paint interiors, either on your own or with the help of a professional, it is useful to know some basics about the available paint categories and materials that will help you get the best result.

Painting interior walls

Take the roll and the extension handle and throw the acrylic paint on the paintbrush or use a bucket with a grill. Decide which wall to make first and paint it with smooth, even lines. While waiting for the first coat of paint to dry, wrap the roller or brush in plastic wrap.

Then apply the secondlayer. Put some acrylic paint in small containers and paint the corners and edges of the room using a small brush. When finished, clean the brush, cans, bucket and roller. If you used masking tape, remove it as soon as the paint dries.

Spreading the paint with the brush

When using a brush it is best to apply the paint first left and right or up and down as you prefer. Make long strokes starting from the dry area and complete the line to the wet area. When the paint is dry, apply the second layer.

This creates a better and more uniform result. If you use dark paint, you may need three coats! Allow the first layer to dry completely before applying the second layer. See the drying time on the paint label.

Cleaning the brushes and the roller

If paint has spilled and is still wet, clean it immediately with a damp cloth. If it has already dried, it will be difficult to clean. While waiting, keep the brush or roller moist: you can place it in a plastic bag or carefully cover it with plastic wrap.

After wrapping it, place the brush or roller in the refrigerator. This may sound a bit strange, but it’s really helpful. The cold delays the drying of the paint. Remove the brush and roller from the refrigerator 30 minutes before you need them so they will still be flexible and ready to use.

If using acrylic paint, clean the brush with water and a small amount of detergent. Rinse until the water is clear. Lay the bristles of the brush in their original shape and let the brush dry.

Removal of excess paint

If you are painting large surfaces, you can use a special grille to remove excess paint from the brush. Alternatively, if you use smaller containers, put their contents in a 5 liter bucket.

The paint grate is a rectangular metal or plastic grid that is attached to the end of the bucket. Fill the bucket halfway with paint and hang the grill inside. Dip the roller in the paint and pass it through the grill to remove the excess paint. When finished, leave the grill in the pan and place the lid on top.

How to choose colors?

The choice of colors can play a vital role in giving a rich personality to your home. The choice in color depends on the location, size and function of your spaces.

Each color has its own characteristics, such as light colors where they are considered to grow and give light to small rooms while dark ones are mainly to create the feeling in large rooms.

When choosing a color scheme, choose according to the architecture of the space and the choice should be with the colors you can live with them.

Before starting the project, you need to decide if you want the basic colors, neutral, vivid or you want to create a strong visual impression.

Some features of different colors are below where you can choose which ones suit your spaces.

Basic colors

The basic colors are considered to be the basis for the other colors. These are related to comics, contemporary art and pop art. You can see different shades such as red, green, blue and yellow. It’s really great experience to apply a basic color to the walls.

Especially when it comes to bright yellow that brings radiance and brightness, suitable for specific areas, such as the bathroom or kitchen. Both the bathroom and the kitchen are the areas that face the most wear so use paints that are easy to wash and clean.

Bright colors

They are the colors that come from the spectrum of light and when we talk about light and bright colors for interior painting in the house it means that these colors create a visual impression of brightness and spaciousness of the space.

These colors are very attractive for living rooms and some wall hanging paintings. It does not matter if the ceiling is high or low, but white can obviously increase the height of the room. White is ideal for walls that can be painted.

Bright colors like green, and blue are very cool for the bedroom and ideal to create a cool and calm effect. For the study room or home library, green and brown are the best colors to use. If you want bright colors for your kitchen, then go for gray on the walls, which goes very well with stainless steel.

Painting: How to renew your walls

Painting the walls is the fastest and most economical way to renovate and upgrade your home, so that you fall in love with your home again! However, about one in 10 people say they postpone painting because they do not know where to start.

So, we have prepared an easy-to-use to-do list with the basic tips, tools and tricks to achieve a professional result – whether you are painting for the first time or painting regularly.

You will need:

  •  The wall colors of your choice
  • A roller and a tray
  • Brushes
  • A stirring blade for the paint
  • Paper tape
  • Plastic covers (for covering furniture and lamps)
  • Cardboard (for covering the floor)
  • A ladder (to get to those difficult points)

1. Choose a shade

The color of your walls has a huge impact on the overall look and feel of a room, so it is important to do it right.

Once you find the perfect shade, you can go to the product page and calculate exactly the quantity you need to buy.

2. Ready for the paper tape

Cover the sockets, frames, skirting board, ceiling frame and anything else you do not want to paint, with paper tape. Be sure to nail it to the pallets only on the back and two sides not the front.

3. Cover everything

It is a good idea to remove all the furniture from the room, but if this is not possible, then cover them with plastic covers or an old sheet. Plastic bags are an economical and easy way to protect things like luminaires.

Lay a piece of cardboard under the surface you are painting. Paint can splash your floor, no matter how careful you are.

4. Dust your walls

For an extremely smooth finish, it is important to dust your walls before you start painting the walls. A quick pass with a dry cloth is usually all that is needed. Pay attention to the corners on the ceiling, where there may be cobwebs.

This is also the right time to scrape irregularities from the surface of your wall and remove any old nails or screws, filling the gaps with trowel putty.

5. Start painting the walls

You do not need to normally use primer on walls that have already been painted, so you can open your buckets with wall paint. Dilute the wall paint according to the instructions on the package.

Mix your paint with the stirring blade and pour a little into the tray. Use the medium-sized brush to make the cuts, passing through the edges of the paper tape.

Use the roller to paint the rest of the surface. The key to achieving a smooth, even finish is not to over-load your brush or roller with paint.

Allow the first coat to dry and then apply the second coat. You may need a third coat if you are going to make a very large color change .

6. Remove the paper tape

While the paint on the wall is still fresh, carefully peel off the paper tape. If you allow the paint to dry, you run the risk of peeling off pieces of paint with the paper tape. If this happens, just correct these points with a small brush.

7. Take a step back and admire the result of your work!

That’s it! Now you have smooth, beautiful walls waiting to become the backdrop for the rest of your décor!

How to find the right color

Different colors suit different rooms, so the first step is to evaluate your space. If your room faces north and is often cold, bright colors in vibrant, clean shades will intensify the light and make it look warmer. If your room faces south, most colors are appropriate – even the darkest.

Consider using the room. Is it to eat, to work or to sleep? Use color to create the mood you want to achieve. Cool, calm, pale colors such as light green and water blue evoke calm, while intense, dark colors such as red and purple will stimulate the senses.

The magic of collage

Once you have chosen the colors, take samples of colors and fabrics that include different tones of your chosen shades. Use a flat surface or white cardboard as a background for the combination.

Organize and reorganize according to your desire. Take your time. Do not forget to take a few steps back and look at it from a distance. You will know when you did it.

Try it before you buy

Small one-liter color swatches are a great way to make sure the color you love looks just as good on your walls as it does on your collage.

Paint different spots in different lighting or hang a painted A4 paper on different walls to see how the colors look in natural and artificial light and at different times of the day.

That’s why it’s important to consider all the options before proceeding with a project of any size. Whether you are designing simple designs for your dream space, or you are trying to design a major remodel, below you will find clever ideas and tips for kitchen renovation.

You should know that kitchen remodelling costs a lot of money. After all, a good return on investment means that the space must be purposeful: bright, organized and stylish.

1. Colors for the kitchen

With all the different types of colors on the market, choosing one color can end up being a very difficult choice. In general, white kitchens, but also kitchens in beige shades are the most popular ideas for the color of the specific space.

Of course, black also seems to be the new trend for the kitchen. Although it is a daring color and we avoid it, it gives an elegance to the space, especially if we handle it properly. We are not used to black in the kitchen. Especially if the kitchen is small or not well lit, black is a risky choice. But we have compiled the most modern black kitchens for inspiration.

The good news is that paint color can change easily, so if you want a bold one, you may want to prefer color over tile (which is more expensive and harder to replace). Before you choose the color of your kitchen it will be good to examine your space and choose a shade based on the overall style.

2. Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets make up one-third of the average renovation budget. They are the ones that essentially determine the whole decoration of the specific space. Whether you love modern or classic style, there are plenty of options. Some materials and colors, however, add clever touches creating a special decorative effect.

While replacing all cabinets can be very rewarding, it can be extremely costly. But there are other ways to renovate cabinets. Some of them are adding lighting, adding wallpaper or stickers or just a paint job. In these ways you can revitalize your old cabinets.

Tips on how to choose the right cabinets

There are many styles of cabinets that are suitable for traditional or modern kitchens. It is important to choose cabinets that match the overall color and style of the kitchen. First, choose what the closet doors will look like, as they are the most visible design elements in the kitchen. So, the style of the door is one of the most important decisions you have to make.

If you have a small space, then you should look for cabinets that offer extra space savings. Some of these are corner carousel cabinets with traditional doors. Next, choose what material your kitchen cabinets will be made of. There is a wide range of materials used to make cabinets. You can choose from stainless steel, melamine, metal or wood. One of the most popular choices for cabinets is solid wood.

3. Kitchen floor

There are a number of different options when it comes to choosing a material for the kitchen floor. Does the space have a lot of traffic? Is your budget tight? Consider our tips for choosing material for kitchen floors, and choose the material that fits and works best in your space.

Wood flooring is the most popular choice and provides a more classic look, compared to other materials. In addition, it is a cheap and alternative to the floor. Materials such as cork and bamboo, among others, are just as economical as kitchen flooring ideas.

If you like the classic style, then you can choose the tiles that give the space a sense of cleanliness, while being extremely durable over time. Ceramic tiles are difficult to get dirty and, at the same time, they are waterproof. If you select this option, select non-slip tiles. An option that is ideal in case you have small children at home.

4. Kitchen counters

Like the floor, the choice of a kitchen counter is based on various factors, from appearance and aesthetics to cost and maintenance. A variety of materials that can be used for kitchen countertops are granite, marble, glass, stainless steel and processed quartz.

Granite

Granite is a 100% natural material, which is cut into manageable sizes for easy processing, and then gets a fine finish. As a natural material it has a high purchase cost. It needs special attention and care. A daily cleaning with water and a mild household cleaner would help maintain them. In addition, it has great resistance to temperature and abrasions.

Quartz

Quartz countertops are gaining in popularity, in relation to granite, due to the variety and uniformity of its colors. Its forms are many and different, in contrast to natural rocks. Like granite, quartz needs special attention and care. However, it is worth noting that this option may cost more due to the fact that quartz plates are sold in small dimensions (functional issues).

Glass

The glass bench is technologically the most advanced there is. Aesthetically it is a very good solution. It is durable and you can find glass in many shades, thus giving a unique style to the kitchen. It has high resistance to heat and stains. It is easy to install and clean, and generally costs relatively little.

The basics of kitchen remodelling

Before you start a kitchen remodelling, it is good to ask yourself what you want to change from the space. Do you have an outdated kitchen that requires a total change? Are the materials old-fashioned and in need of renewal? Can you do it yourself? Are you looking for easy changes to give new life to the space?
